In 2002 we coordinated Canada's first national
conference on bullying ("Fear & Loathing" in
Canadian School Yards). The conference
brought 500 delegates to Ottawa from across
Canada. Three years later in 2005, we
presented the second national conference on
bullying ("Beyond Rhetoric") and again, this
was a resounding success with presenters from
every part of the globe. In April 2007 we
coordinated our third national event "I am
Safe: Protecting the Space called Childhood", a
hugely successful gathering in the Nation's
Capital.
We also coordinate youth conferences relating
to bullying; write and promote productions such
as 'You're Not the Boss of Me', a play about
bullying which has been featured in various
parts of Canada; and we were the driving force
in the development of the Ottawa Anti
Bullying Coalition (OABC).
We believe in working with other adult allies to
help young people learn how to stay safe, act
wisely when confronted with real and perceived
danger, and believe in their own capacity to
contribute to the safety of their schools and
communities.
The very best anti bullying and bullying
awareness programs are those that are
planned strategically with longer term
sustainability in mind. The one time
assembly, theatrical presentation,
juggler, hypnotist and motivational
speaker while perhaps entertaining, and
usually costly, don't cut it as programs.
