Safer Spaces

Re-culture not restructure the school.
Michael Fullan

 :
Safe, caring and supportive schools' provide an environment that protects the emotional, psychological and physical well-being of students. Attempts are made to protect children from verbal, physical, emotional and sexual harm, including indirect forms of bullying and harassment such as discrimination, exclusion and isolation by their peers.

Safe and Caring Schools:
Affirm the right of all school members to feel safe

Promote respect and cooperation, and value diversity

Implement policies, programs and processes to nurture a safe and supportive school culture

Recognize that quality leadership and student engagement are critical elements in the creation and maintenance of a safe school environment

Develop and implement policies and programs through processes that engage the whole school

Ensure that roles and responsibilities of all members of the school community in promoting a safe culture are explicit, clearly understood and disseminated.

Recognize the critical importance of pre-service and ongoing professional development in maintaining a safe and supportive school environment

Provide opportunities for students to learn through the formal curriculum and modeling the knowledge and skills needed for positive relationships

Focus on policies that are proactive and oriented towards prevention and intervention and monitor and evaluate these so that evidence-based practice supports decisions and improvements

Implement clear action plans to protect children from all forms of terror, violence, abuse and neglect.
